In a coordinated effort, European authorities have removed a total of 8.2 million packs of illegal toys from circulation since last Christmas. These seized products, worth an estimated €8.7 million, were discovered in a joint operation by Europol and the EU fraud agency OLAF. The campaign, in which almost 20 countries took part, including non-EU countries such as Albania, Colombia and Serbia, aimed to prevent the spread of counterfeit and unsafe toys on the European market.

A majority of the toys seized posed significant health risks as they were not correctly labeled and contained potentially hazardous materials. Of particular concern is the fact that many of these products come from China, a country that has previously been identified as a major source of counterfeit toys. Authorities warn that such toys may pose risks such as choking or exposure to toxic substances and advise consumers to be particularly vigilant when purchasing toys.

The operation, which has been carried out annually since 2020, shows how important international cooperation is in the fight against counterfeit products. In recent years, German authorities have also taken part in these actions, with a total of 19 million packages confiscated between 2022 and 2023. These were worth 79 million euros, which illustrates the scale of the problem.

Sales of counterfeit products increase particularly during the holidays, as demand for toys is traditionally high during this time. Authorities emphasize the need to better inform consumers and tighten controls at borders to prevent the spread of such dangerous products. Continuous monitoring and strict enforcement of safety standards are critical to ensure the health and safety of consumers.
