The Israeli Defense Forces are under pressure following failures during the attack on October 7, 2023. Chief of General Staff Eyal Zamir has summoned senior officers to discuss possible sanctions. This decision follows an investigation by an external expert panel, which found the previous internal investigations to be inadequate.
Zamir plans to make personal decisions that could lead to the dismissal of some officers. The names of the officers affected and the exact sanctions have not yet been disclosed. The original investigation was led by Herzi Halevi, a former chief of staff.
Some of the affected officers have already retired from service while others are still active. Zamir stressed that these measures are necessary to increase public confidence in the army. Similar discussions also take place at lower ranks to clarify responsibilities.
Among the officers appointed is the current head of the intelligence directorate, Major General Shlomi Binder, whose appointment was controversial. Other officers affected include former Southern Command commander Maj. Gen. Yaron Finkelman and Air Force chief Maj. Gen. Tomer Bar.
The Israeli government recently decided to launch its own investigation, which critics see as an attempt to obscure the government’s responsibility. Zamir, on the other hand, is calling for an independent commission of inquiry to fully clarify the events.
