Romanian Defense Minister Ionut Musteanu announced his resignation on Friday after saying he had made a “mistake” in his CV regarding his university degree, as controversy escalated over him providing false information.

Musteano, who admitted that he wrote on his CV that he graduated from a university he never attended, said he did not want this controversy to “distract” the NATO member state’s attention at a time when it and Europe were under “Russian attack.”

“Today, I resigned from my position as Minister of National Defense. Romania and Europe are under Russian attack. Our national security must be defended with everything possible,” Musteanu said in a Facebook post.

Mustiano was under pressure after a media investigation published Thursday revealed that his CV contained incorrect information.

On the same day, he apologized for what he described as “a mistake that I admit embarrassed me” and said he had prepared his CV in 2016 using a template he found online.

Musteano was appointed Minister of Defense last June in a new pro-European government after months of political turmoil.

Prime Minister Eli Bologan said in a statement that he would propose that Minister of Economy and Tourism Radu Mirota temporarily take over the defense portfolio.
