Harmonic, an artificial intelligence startup, recently raised $120 million in a Series C funding round, bringing the company to a valuation of $1.45 billion. This funding round was led by Ribbit Capital, with participation from existing investors including Sequoia and Kleiner Perkins, as well as new backer Laurene Powell Jobs’ Emerson Collective.

The company, co-founded by Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev, aims to improve the accuracy and reliability of AI systems, particularly by combating so-called AI hallucinations. These hallucinations refer to false or nonsensical answers that can be generated by AI models. Harmonic is developing a ‘Mathematical Superintelligence’ (MSI) that is characterized by advanced logical reasoning and is said to be free of such errors.

Harmonic’s flagship model, called Aristotle, was trained with synthetic mathematical proofs and achieved top performance at the International Mathematical Olympiad in July. This success has played a key role in piquing investor interest. CEO Tudor Achim emphasized that the majority of the new funds will go towards the necessary computing power for training the models.

Harmonic currently offers its Aristotle model via a free API that allows developers to integrate the model into their own software. Mathematicians and researchers use this tool to verify complex proofs and accelerate new discoveries. In the future, the company also plans to explore commercialization of its technologies.

By focusing on verifiable, error-free logic, Harmonic aims to increase trust in AI for safety-critical industries such as aerospace and finance. These industries require the highest level of reliability as errors can have serious consequences. CEO Tudor Achim explained that the elimination of hallucinations comes directly from the system having to output the reasoning as computer code instead of natural language.
