Google Maps recently announced a major expansion to its features that could significantly improve the experience of using the app while driving. By integrating Gemini, an AI-powered technology, users can now ask interactive questions and receive more precise navigation instructions. These innovations promise a safer and more efficient driving experience.
With Gemini, drivers can ask questions while driving about interesting places along their route or find out about current topics such as sports or news. Additionally, the technology allows appointments to be added to the calendar, making organization on the go easier. These features are particularly useful for frequent travelers who want to make the most of their time.
Another highlight of the new functions is the improved navigation, which now uses landmarks such as gas stations or well-known buildings for orientation. This visual support could make navigation in unfamiliar areas much easier and increase road safety. To do this, Google combined information about 250 million places with Street View data to identify visible and important landmarks.
In addition to improved navigation, Google Maps now also offers the ability to ask questions about the immediate surroundings. Working with Google Lens, users can point their camera at places of interest and answer questions like “What is this place and why is it popular?” place. This feature might be of particular interest to tourists who want to learn more about their surroundings.
The new features will be available for iOS and Android devices in the coming weeks, with support for Android Auto coming soon. Traffic reports will initially be rolled out in the US for Android users, while landmark navigation will also initially only be available in the US. Lens’s integration with Gemini will be operational in the US later this month.
