With the Suncatcher project, Google has launched an ambitious project that aims to explore the limits of AI computing technology in space. This project, developed by X, Google’s so-called ‘Moonshot Factory’, aims to explore the possibilities of solar-powered satellites equipped with Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) AI chips. These satellites are intended to use the sun’s energy to scale computing power in space.

A central aspect of the project is the planned collaboration with the Planet company to launch two prototype satellites by early 2027. These satellites will not only test the functionality of the models and TPU hardware in space, but also validate the use of inter-satellite optical links for distributed machine learning tasks.

Google’s initial research shows that the fundamental concepts of space-based machine learning are not precluded by fundamental physical laws or insurmountable economic barriers. However, significant technical challenges must be overcome, including thermal management, high-bandwidth communications to Earth and the reliability of systems in orbit.

Planet emphasized in a statement that working on complex, powerful computations in space is in line with its technology development roadmap for the recently announced Owl mission.
