The German paper industry has made remarkable progress in the area of recycling in recent years. With a waste paper share of 84 percent in production, Germany is setting new standards. As recently as 2020, this share was 79 percent, underlining the industry’s dynamism and commitment to sustainable practices. This development is significantly supported by the Pro Recycling Paper initiative, which is supported by 25 companies from various industries.
A key driver of this development is the boom in online trading, which has greatly increased the need for packaging materials. While graphic papers have become less important in recent years, packaging papers such as corrugated cardboard and newspaper are particularly in demand. These types of paper achieve extremely high recycling rates, as they require over one kilogram of waste paper to produce one kilogram of recycled paper.
Germany is the world’s fifth largest consumer of paper, only surpassed by China, the USA, Japan and India. Waste paper is the main component of the raw materials in German paper production. This is supplemented by paper pulp, which is mainly imported from Brazil. Sweden and Finland are also important suppliers, but by a significant margin.
Consumers can support recycling by disposing of newspapers, flyers and other printed matter in the waste paper collection. Cardboard and boxes should not be shredded, but folded to make it easier to return them to the production of cardboard and corrugated cardboard. These measures help to further increase the recycling rate and reduce environmental impact.
