The future of the German port infrastructure is currently being intensively discussed in Hamburg, where the twelfth port development dialogue is taking place. This event has established itself as a central platform for strategic discussions, bringing together representatives of the northern German federal states, the port industry and the federal government. The focus is on the national port strategy, which was adopted by the Federal Cabinet in March 2024 and formulates ambitious goals for the further development of sea and inland ports in Germany.

A key part of the discussions is the question of financing. The strategy’s comprehensive catalog of measures contains around 140 initiatives to strengthen the port industry. Nevertheless, there are critical voices that criticize the inadequate clarification of the financing issue. Without clear regulations, the achievement of the goals could be at risk, which underlines the importance of increased financial support from the federal government.

Hamburg’s Senator for Economic Affairs Melanie Leonhard emphasizes that the cities are no longer able to bear the financial burden of modernizing seaports alone. She demands that the special fund for infrastructure and climate neutrality should be urgently used to initiate essential modernization projects. These demands are supported by the Central Association of German Seaport Companies and the northern German federal states, which together demand an annual increase in federal funding of 500 million euros.

The discussions in Hamburg will be held in the presence of Claudia Stutz, State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Transport. Your participation underlines the importance of the discussions and the attention that the topic enjoys at the federal level. After the negotiations have been concluded, Stutz is expected to make a fundamental statement on the future direction of national port policy, which should show clear ways to support and develop German port locations.
