SCHWERIN / LONDON (IT BOLTWISE) – In view of the rising social costs in German municipalities, Chancellor Friedrich Merz has pledged support. During a visit to Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, he emphasized the need to help communities fulfill their legal obligations. At the same time, he pointed out that the solution lies in correcting the expenditure side, as neither the federal nor state governments can fully compensate for the cost increases.

The financial situation of German municipalities has become increasingly worse in recent years, particularly due to rising social costs. Chancellor Friedrich Merz has now responded to the calls for help from the mayors of the state capitals and promised support. He emphasized the need to help local governments meet their legal obligations, which are often imposed by federal and state laws. Merz acknowledged the seriousness of the situation and promised to take the communities’ concerns seriously.
A central problem is the rapidly increasing costs in areas such as youth welfare, integration assistance and social assistance for care. These expenses have become an unbearable burden for many municipalities. However, Merz made it clear that the solution did not lie in higher federal or state funding, but rather in more careful management of expenses. He emphasized that the effectiveness of the welfare state was not being questioned, but that a more efficient use of existing resources was necessary.
During his visit to Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Merz was also able to announce some positive news: the construction of the Wolgast bypass will continue. This project, intended to reduce traffic congestion in the region, had stalled due to increased costs. Originally estimated at 140 million euros, the costs are now estimated at around 500 million euros. Completion is scheduled for 2028, having previously set 2026 as the target.
The importance of the bypass extends far beyond the region, as it not only makes access to the island of Usedom easier, but also represents an important transport connection. Merz admitted that the complexity and financial viability of the project was underestimated during planning, but was confident that the necessary funds can be provided. The transport budget was recently increased by three billion euros to finance such projects.
