Discovered on July 1, 2025, Comet 3I/ATLAS has captured social media attention ever since. As the third interstellar object recorded in the solar system, it joins 1I/Oumuamua (2017) and 2I/Borisov (2019). Despite the fascination that the comet generates, space agencies such as NASA have come under fire for not yet providing a high-resolution image of the object. This has led to amateur astronomers continuing to capture glowing images of the comet, including its tail and antitail.

Amid the information and speculation surrounding 3I/ATLAS, there are some media outlets that elude even the keenest fact-checkers, community notes, and experts. This manipulated media has caused significant damage to the reputation of the reporting and the platform, which is already struggling with misinformation and fake news.

A video circulating on social media purportedly shows 3I/ATLAS as a glowing object with multiple streaks of light, giving the impression that it is a spacecraft. To untrained eyes that barely follow the hype surrounding the interstellar comet, the image could either seem too good to be true or confirm their suspicion of an alien probe. The greenish glow honestly makes it look like a paramecium under a microscope.

Experts like Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb, who has listed 13 anomalies of the object, warn against such fake videos. Loeb speculates that 3I/ATLAS could be more than just a comet, but even he doesn’t fall for the fake videos. Those interested should stick to trustworthy sources such as NASA or other observatories for reliable information.
