Mexico City.- In the last two years the sale of shredded paper craft and Mexican decreased drastically in the capital, an issue that merchants attribute to the offering of similar products made with Chinese machines and materialswhich are cheaper but of lower quality.

Patricia is a merchant who has been living in La Merced for more than 10 years, and shared with Enough Diary that the merchandise of this type that he bought for the time of the celebrations for the dead in 2024, he recycled to offer it in this year’s season hoping to recover the investment, however, he confessed that his sales in this regard are almost zero so far.

The seller, who began offering items related to the celebrations to the faithful deceased since last October 1, explained that the figures made by machine and with Chinese paper can be obtained and offered at prices one third cheaper, in addition to the fact that she usually invests more due to the quality of the chopping carried out by indigenous communities in Puebla.

“The paper is thicker, the figure of the one from Puebla is better defined, the one from China falls apart quickly,” he commented on the difference between the quality of the material.

The interviewee confessed that in another store she manages, she has already resorted to selling Chinese material to recover her investment, however, she assured that at least during this year’s season, she will only display classic Mexican papel picado at her stand in the store. Merced.

It should be noted that the origin of this craft in Mexico dates back to the 19th century, and it was declared Cultural Heritage of Puebla in 1998, however, the practice has been carried out in Europe since the 16th century.
