United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres – who was a guest on the “Special Encounter” program – described the situation in Gaza as very fragile, and said that aid to the Strip had improved but was still insufficient to provide the necessary minimum.
Guterres explained that Israel is placing obstacles to the delivery of aid to the Gaza Strip, citing the ineffectiveness of the United Nations, and called for ensuring the full implementation of the ceasefire agreement in Gaza.
He also confirmed that about 400 relief workers were killed in the Gaza Strip, and “this cannot be tolerated.” He said, “We will remain in the Gaza Strip and will not abandon the Palestinians in it.”
On the other hand, he stressed that the United Nations Secretariat is not involved in the discussion surrounding the draft resolution that Washington is working on drafting.
He stressed that the American draft resolution will be subject to discussion among the member states of the UN Security Council, stressing that the position of the United Nations is clear: “Whatever entity is formed in Gaza, it must derive its legitimacy from the Security Council.”

Regarding the Sudanese issue, Guterres called for imposing enormous pressure on both sides of the conflict in Sudan so that they realize that they must stop the war. He called – in an exclusive interview with Al Jazeera – for perpetrators of crimes in Sudan not to escape punishment.
Guterres sent an urgent call to the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces to cooperate with his special envoy and work to reach a political settlement that ends the bloody conflict in the country.
In the same context, he said, “There are many parties involved in the conflict, and there are many weapons coming from abroad, and it is necessary for all forms of foreign interference to stop.”
On the other hand, Guterres touched on the issue of reforming the Security Council, and said that there are reforms on the table to reform the Council, but he doubted the possibility of the major powers being willing to give up their veto power in the Security Council, and this is a dilemma, he said.
In his meeting with Al Jazeera – on the sidelines of the World Summit for Social Development in Doha – he also raised the issue of climate change, and said that there is an urgent need to spend $1.3 trillion annually to finance the fight against climate change in developing countries.
The Secretary-General warned that humanity still suffers from poverty, displacement and unemployment, and that the international community is not working quickly enough to benefit from innovation and address global warming.
