The German automotive industry is facing major challenges, as former VW boss Matthias Müller emphasized in an interview. He sees the industry in a critical phase, which is being exacerbated by political and entrepreneurial mistakes. Suppliers in particular are affected by massive job cuts, which Müller describes as a “job massacre”. This development is a sign of the advancing deindustrialization in Germany, which Müller views with concern.
Müller criticizes the fact that politicians are relying too heavily on electromobility without taking the necessary transition phases into account. He advocates a pragmatic and balanced approach in which both e-mobility and combustion engines with hybrid drives or synthetic fuels are used in parallel. Despite the challenges, Müller is optimistic. He points to the expertise of German suppliers, who have repeatedly overcome crises in the past. He advises today’s CEOs in the automotive industry to concentrate on what’s important: product and customer orientation along the entire value chain. Müller is convinced that the German auto industry will also overcome this crisis.
