NETHERLANDS / LONDON (IT BOLTWISE) – Europe’s first in-orbit Capture the Flag competition took place in the Netherlands, delighting the cybersecurity community. This competition, organized by D-Orbit and mhackeroni, attracted 559 teams, 299 of which solved at least one challenge. Participants had to interpret real telemetry data and send command sequences to an operational spacecraft.

A significant milestone in space cybersecurity has been reached in the Netherlands: Europe’s first in-orbit Capture-the-Flag (CTF) competition. This event, organized by D-Orbit, a space logistics company, and mhackeroni, a leading ethical hacking team, attracted the attention of the international cybersecurity community. The competition was supported by the ESA Security Cyber Center of Excellence (SCCoE) and the ESA Security Office.
The competition, known as CTRL+Space CTF, took place November 4-6 at ESA ESTEC (European Space Research and Technology Center) in the Netherlands. During the Security for Space Systems (3S) conference, five teams competed in live cybersecurity scenarios aboard a real operational spacecraft. Participants had to overcome complex safety challenges, including interpreting telemetry data and sending commands to the spacecraft.
The challenges also included analyzing spacecraft data to understand the spacecraft’s attitude and orbit, which is critical to the control and operation of satellites. In addition, participants had to interact with the onboard software to uncover and exploit potential vulnerabilities. These tasks required a high level of technical knowledge and problem-solving skills.
Grazia Bibiano, D-Orbit’s country manager in Portugal, emphasized the importance of cybersecurity in the new space economy. She explained that cybersecurity needs to be built into the design from the start as it cannot simply be viewed as an add-on. This philosophy is reflected in the conduct of the competition, which highlights the importance of safety measures in the space industry.
