The European Space Agency (ESA) recently secured a record budget of 22.1 billion euros for the next three years. This significant investment aims to strengthen Europe’s independence in space and promote cooperation in the areas of security and defense. At a ministerial meeting in Bremen, plans for future scientific space missions supported by the 23 member states of ESA were presented.
Germany is the largest contributor with over five billion euros, followed by France with 3.7 billion euros. This financial support shows Europe’s growing interest in space as a rapidly developing economic sector. ESA Director Josef Aschbacher emphasized that space travel is becoming increasingly important for security and defense and that Europe must catch up in this area.
A central point of the discussions in Bremen was the “European Resilience from Space” program, which includes earth observation, navigation and telecommunications. With an estimated budget of 1.35 billion euros, the program has both civil and military applications and aims to strengthen European security. ESA also plans to outsource the development of the continent’s first reusable rocket to external companies.
The space industry has changed significantly in recent years, particularly with the rise of SpaceX, which dominates the space launch market. Europe lost its independent ability to launch projects into space after Russia withdrew its missiles following its 2022 invasion of Ukraine. After several delays, Europe’s new Ariane 6 heavy-lift rocket finally launched last year, but unlike SpaceX’s Falcon 9, it is not reusable.
ESA also plans to work with NASA to support the European Mars rover Rosalind Franklin, scheduled to launch in 2028. Proposed scientific projects include the first space-based laser observatory LISA to study gravitational waves and the NewAthena X-ray telescope to study extreme events in the universe. Another project involves sending a space probe to Saturn’s moon Enceladus, which may harbor a liquid ocean beneath its ice layer.
