BRUSSELS / LONDON (IT BOLTWISE) – The EU Parliament’s decision to postpone the deforestation regulation has sparked heated debate. The EU Parliament’s recent decision to postpone the deforestation regulation has sparked a wave of criticism. The conservative EPP group, supported by right-wing parties, pushed through the postponement, which is seen by the Greens and the Left as a setback for global forest protection. The regulation was originally supposed to come into force at the end of 2024 to require companies to prove the deforestation-free origin of certain products.
The vote in Parliament was 402 to 250 with 8 abstentions. In addition to the conservative EPP group, parts of the liberal Renew group as well as right-wing alliances such as PfE and the ESN group also agreed. This decision follows a similar vote in November, where the EPP found support for easing the supply chain law.
The postponement of the regulation stipulates that large companies have another year and smaller companies until mid-2027 to implement the new regulations. This is in contrast to the EU Commission’s proposal, which only envisaged a six-month postponement. The German government influenced the position of the Member States, which is largely in line with the position of the Parliament.
Green MEP Anna Cavazzini criticized the increasing conservative-right alliances as a strategic direction of the EPP. In contrast, CDU MEP Christine Schneider defended the result as a position broadly supported by EU member states. The final negotiations between Parliament and the EU member states are now underway, with relaxed reporting requirements and a review of simplification measures being called for by the end of April next year.
