The European car market showed positive developments in October, as new car registrations in the European Union rose by 5.8 percent compared to the previous year. A total of 916,609 vehicles were newly registered, indicating a recovery in the market. Nevertheless, the level of the pre-Corona period remains unmatched, which underlines the challenges facing the industry.
A notable trend is the increase in the share of purely electric cars, which rose from 13.2 to 16.4 percent in the first ten months of the year. This shows consumers’ increasing interest in more environmentally friendly vehicles. At the same time, the electric car pioneer Tesla is recording a significant decline in its new registrations in the EU. Only 5,647 Tesla vehicles were newly registered in October, a decline of 48 percent compared to the previous year.
The Volkswagen Group remains the undisputed market leader in the EU, with new registrations of its brands increasing by 7.9 percent in October. However, within the group, Porsche recorded a decline of 28 percent. Other German manufacturers such as BMW and Mercedes-Benz were also able to increase their registration numbers, with BMW increasing by 8.7 percent and Mercedes-Benz by 2.0 percent.
The Stellantis Group, which includes brands such as Peugeot, Citroen, Fiat and Opel, also recorded an increase of 6.6 percent. These developments show that the European car market is well on its way to recovery and growth, despite the challenges posed by the pandemic and economic uncertainties. The increasing acceptance of electric vehicles could play a key role in this.
