The PlayStation Store, once a haven for gamers and developers alike, is increasingly facing criticism. The reason: a flood of so-called AI shovelware games that flood the store and make it difficult to discover high-quality games. This development is causing frustration not only among players, but also among developers.

An indie developer took to Reddit to vent his anger over the current situation. He describes how difficult it has become for small studios to gain attention on the PlayStation Store. While AI-generated games seem to pass through Sony’s quality controls effortlessly, real, innovative games often face obstacles.

What is particularly annoying for the developer is the unequal treatment he has experienced. While his new game, a PSVR 2 version of ‘Trenches’, had to be postponed due to regulations, other, lower quality games appear to be releasing without any problems. This disparity raises questions about PlayStation Store’s curation and quality controls.

Another issue the developer addresses is game theft. Some time ago a complete game was stolen from him and successfully offered on the PS Store. Although the title has now been taken offline, the thieves were able to profit from it while the actual developer came away empty-handed. These incidents show that the regulations are not only unevenly enforced, but also have security gaps.

The PlayStation Store situation is an example of a larger problem that also affects other platforms such as Nintendo eShop. Stronger curation could help ensure the quality of the games on offer and give developers a fair chance to present their works. The question remains whether the major platforms are willing to take the necessary steps to resolve these issues.
