DB Fernverkehr AG has taken a significant step towards modernizing its fleet by opting for a leasing model to finance 25 new ICE3neo high-speed trains. These trains, manufactured by Siemens Mobility, are not only technologically advanced, but also comply with the Green Loan Principles and are EU taxonomy compliant. This makes it a sustainable investment in the future of mobility.
The financing volume for this project amounts to almost one billion euros. A consortium led by BayernLB, which also includes Siemens Financial Services, is providing these funds. BayernLB has managed to attract other well-known national and international banks and investors to the consortium, which underlines the high level of interest in this asset class.
The leasing structure, which was developed by DAL Deutsche Anlagen-Leasing, offers DB Fernverkehr AG the opportunity to use the trains over a period of ten years without relinquishing operational responsibility. The trains are serviced and maintained in DB Fernverkehr AG’s own ICE factories. This model is being used for the first time for ICE trains and is intended to increase flexibility in fleet management.
Wilken Bormann, CFO of DB Fernverkehr AG, emphasized the advantages of the leasing model, which strengthens the financial ability to act without giving up operational responsibility. Andreas Geue from DAL and Johannes Anschott from BayernLB highlighted the importance of this financing for the modernization of rail transport in Germany. Veronika Bienert from Siemens Financial Services emphasized the role of modern high-speed trains in promoting sustainable mobility.
