LONDON (IT BOLTWISE) – The idea of data centers in space sounds like something out of a science fiction movie, but leading CEOs see it as a realistic future. With the rapid development of artificial intelligence and the increasing need for computing power, space is becoming increasingly attractive as a new location for data centers.

The idea of data centers in space may seem futuristic at first glance, but for many technology industry leaders it is a serious possibility. Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, recently spoke about the vision behind this concept. He emphasized that the increasing demand for computing power will soon no longer be adequately met due to advances in artificial intelligence and the growing amount of data on earth.

Google is working on an ambitious project called Suncatcher that aims to equip solar-powered satellite constellations with Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) and free-space optical interconnects to scale machine learning in space. These constellations could consist of about 80 satellites positioned at an altitude of about 400 miles above the Earth’s surface.

A key factor driving this vision is the rapid decline in the price of space launches. According to a study published by Google, the cost of operating a space-based data center could be comparable to those on Earth by the mid-2030s. This opens up new opportunities for scaling computing capacities and using renewable energy in space.

Despite the promising prospects, there are still significant technical challenges to be overcome. These include thermal management, high-bandwidth communications to Earth and the reliability of systems in orbit. Google remains optimistic that the first TPUs could be used in space by 2027, but engineers face complex tasks that need to be solved.
