The tranquility of the pantheon of Santiago Tlaxomulcoin Toluca was violated early Wednesday morning by a destruction attack that left more than thirty tombs damaged, it is not ruled out that the attack is related to some terrorist activity. Santeria or devil worship.
The paths between graves dawned covered in rubble, with broken crosses, broken photographs and vases reduced to fragments. The usual silence of the cemetery transformed into crying and anger when relatives arrived to visit their deceased and found a devastating scene.
“This is a lack of respect for everyone. They not only broke stones, they broke the peace of our families,” said Doña Carmen, a resident of the community, while collecting the pieces of her mother’s tombstone. Like her, dozens of people gathered in front of the pantheon to demand explanations and urgent security measures.
According to police reports, the attack occurred between 9:00 p.m. and 12:00 a.m. A man identified as Rolan “N”, 32, was arrested after being caught running barefoot between the graves and throwing objects against the tombstones. The authorities indicated that the detainee showed obvious signs of intoxication and was transferred to the Public Ministry for the crime of damage to property.
However, residents doubt that he acted alone. “A single individual cannot cause so much destruction in such a short time. Several must have entered here, organized. This was not a coincidence,” said Don Miguel, who reported that his wife’s tomb was completely destroyed. Some residents even suspect that the attack could be related to rituals or acts of desecration.
After the attack, the auxiliary authorities placed a notice at the entrance of the pantheon informing that the case was turned over to the Attorney General’s Office of the State of Mexico and asking those affected to formalize their complaints at the Metepec Justice Center.
