In the early hours of Black Friday, scores of Target customers waited patiently in the cold to get their hands on one of the coveted gift bags. But there was great disappointment when the contents of the bags turned out to be less than spectacular. Many users on social media expressed their displeasure with the selection, which only consisted of small sweets, powdered drink samples, shampoo and a deck of Uno cards.
One TikTok user summed it up: “You make people wait in the cold just to give them gummy bears? That’s diabolical.” This criticism reflects the general dissatisfaction that has spread across social media. Despite the negative response, all gift bags were sold out by the time the store opened at 6 a.m., with some stores seeing up to 500 customers waiting.
However, a lucky few received more than just the standard equipment. Ten bags containing additional prizes ranging in value from $99 to $350 were distributed at each participating store. These included, among other things, Target gift cards, a Laifen hair dryer, a Ninja slushie machine and Beats headphones. However, this was not enough to assuage the general disappointment.
In contrast, Lowe’s was praised for its generous gifts. The hardware store handed out buckets of building materials, including drill sets and bucket-shaped coffee cups. Some lucky winners even found vouchers for free home appliances worth up to $2,000. This promotion was described as nostalgic and Christmas-like and stood out from Target’s offering.
