A man was arrested after sexually harassing the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaumduring a meeting with supporters held in front of the National Palace.
According to the first reports, the individual—identified as Uriel— tried to kiss and touch the president when she approached the publicMinutes later, he was arrested by the capital authorities. The information was confirmed and disseminated by journalist Carlos Jiménez, who published a photograph of the alleged aggressor after his arrest.
In the next few hours, The Mexico City Prosecutor’s Office is expected to reveal more details about his arrestthe ongoing investigation and the sanction that could be imposed.
According to Article 259 Bis of the Federal Penal Code, any person who harasses or harasses for lewd purposes can be punished with six to ten years in prison and up to 200 days of fine, if the act is considered aggravated sexual abuse.
For its part, Article 179 Bis of the Penal Code of Mexico City contemplates penalties of one to three years in prison and fines of 100 to 200 days for those who repeatedly carry out non-consensual physical or verbal acts.
The final sanction will depend on the legal classification of the crime —whether harassment, harassment or sexual abuse— and if aggravating circumstances are determined, such as the use of force or the vulnerable position of the victim, in some entities of the country, street sexual harassment can be punished with up to eight years in prison and 500 days of fine.
