The US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) recently released a warning about ongoing spyware campaigns that specifically target users of mobile messaging apps such as Signal and WhatsApp. These threats use commercial spyware and remote access Trojans (RATs) to gain unauthorized access to victims’ messaging apps and install additional malicious software on their devices.

Of particular concern is the attackers’ use of sophisticated social engineering techniques to achieve their goals. CISA highlights that these activities primarily target high-level individuals, including current and former government, military and political officials, as well as members of civil society organizations in the United States, the Middle East and Europe.

Some of the campaigns that have come to light include Russian threat actors exploiting Signal’s “connected devices” feature to hijack user accounts. There are also Android spyware campaigns, codenamed ProSpy and ToSpy, that disguise themselves as apps like Signal and ToTok to infect users in the United Arab Emirates.

To counter these threats, CISA recommends a number of security measures. This includes only using end-to-end encrypted communications, using phishing-resistant authentication such as FIDO, avoiding SMS-based multi-factor authentication and regularly updating software. These measures are intended to help increase the security of affected users and reduce the attack surface for cybercriminals.
