The latest development in the trade dispute between China and the USA has led to a significant easing of tensions, particularly for the European auto industry. China has lifted the previously imposed export ban on Nexperia chips, allowing companies such as Volkswagen and automotive supplier Aumovio to stabilize their supply chains again. These chips are essential for the production of electronic control units in vehicles, and their availability is crucial to maintaining production.

The background to this development lies in the control that the Dutch government took over the semiconductor company Nexperia at the end of September. Nexperia, a subsidiary of the Chinese Wingtech group, was affected by an export ban imposed by China in response to this control. However, the recent agreement between China and the US has paved the way for exemptions that will allow the export of the chips again.

Volkswagen and Aumovio have already received the first deliveries, averting the immediate risk of production stops. Ralf Brandstätter, Volkswagen board member, emphasized that the Chinese Ministry of Commerce’s quick response after the agreement with the US was crucial. However, the question remains as to how sustainable this solution is and to what extent it depends on bilateral relations between China and the USA.

The importance of Nexperia chips to the auto industry cannot be overstated. They are a central component of the electronic control systems of modern vehicles. Recent developments show how vulnerable global supply chains are and how strongly they can be influenced by geopolitical decisions. The Netherlands is now hoping for a normalization of the supply chain and has announced talks with China to find a long-term solution.
