The proposed regulation requires all cars to start in a mode where they need at least five seconds to reach 100 km/h, unless the driver manually selects a faster setting.
This initiative is part of a broader program to improve road safety and behavior in China. The new regulation, which is intended to replace the current GB 7258-2017 standard, could particularly affect the growing fleet of electric vehicles, which are known for their impressive acceleration. Models such as the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra, the Zeekr 001 FR and the Tesla Model S Plaid, all of which can accelerate to 100 km/h in less than three seconds, would fall under this new restriction.
The regulation could work similarly to Eco mode in many electric vehicles, which regulates the vehicle’s performance through software restrictions. Drivers would still have the option to switch to a faster mode, but would have to reactivate it after each start. This measure could also be seen as a response to the increasing spread of electric vehicles, which pose new challenges for road safety due to their high performance and fast acceleration.
Similar regulations already exist in Europe, but they are aimed more at speed warnings than at direct restrictions. However, the planned Chinese regulation could set a new standard that will attract attention worldwide.
