Another example of the legendary collaboration between director Yorgos Lanthimos and actress Emma Stone.
Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone show us again that they can make challenging films, although this time satire on emotion or social commentary wins.
Yorgos, Greek director with absurd proposals par excellence such as The Lobsterand Emma Stone, famous for La La Land among other productions, they collaborated for the first time with the extraordinary The Favoritewhere Stone battled Rachel Weisz for Olivia Colman’s attention.
However, the creative alliance between Emma and Yorgos reached its peak with Poor Things, where the actress plays a woman created from scratch and knows the world through sexual freedom and pleasure. This hilarious and emotional film earned Stone his second Oscar.
Will this duo once again be able to give people something to talk about? Bugonia? I feel that this film is not so destined for awards, but it does feel contemporary and important for its themes.
On this occasion, our red-haired chameleon plays a successful businesswoman from a mysterious company, focused on “success” in every sense and hypocritically following the corporate values of modernity.
The plot takes a turn for the terrifying and the absurd when some men kidnap her, with the theory that she is actually an alien on a mission to end the human race. The story takes constant turns, constantly maintaining your alliances and your doubts: you don’t know what is really happening until the shocking ending. Unfortunately, such a loaded plot makes us forget the important messages contained in the script, both its exposure of twisted humanity, as well as corporate exploitation and the repercussions of trauma.
The problem with covering so many topics is usually not giving enough to everyone, leaving you with a meaningless conclusion without satisfactory closures.
However, Emma Stone’s performance continues to be versatile in the hands of our favorite Greek. Apparently Lanthimos will take a well-deserved break from making films after this production, but we are sure that the partnership will continue to bear fruit later.
