Black Forest Labs, an emerging AI startup from the Black Forest, recently closed a significant Series B financing round, raising $300 million. This investment brings the company’s valuation to an impressive $3.25 billion. The funding round was led by Salesforce Ventures and AMP, with AMP being a new investment vehicle from Andreessen Horowitz and led by Anjney Midha. Other new investors include Temasek, Bain Capital Ventures and Canva Ventures, while existing investors such as Andreessen Horowitz and NVIDIA remain on board.
Black Forest Labs was founded in 2024 by Andreas Blattmann, Robin Rombach and Axel Sauer in Freiburg. The founders, who met while doing their doctorates at Heidelberg University, specialized in developing deep learning models that can convert text into images. Their main product, the Flux model, has already convinced well-known customers such as Adobe, Canva and Microsoft.
Despite its small workforce of just 50 people, the company has established itself as one of the fastest-growing AI startups in Europe. Black Forest Labs was able to raise $31 million in the seed round in August 2024. The fresh capital from the current financing round will flow into research and development in order to further advance the technology and open up new markets.
Black Forest Labs’ focus on generating images and videos from text prompts positions the company in a rapidly growing artificial intelligence market segment.
