Once known as an indispensable tool in creative agencies and media production, the image of the Mac Pro has changed significantly in recent years. The introduction of the compact round case in 2013 marked a turning point. This design significantly limited expansion options because the narrow design made it difficult to install more powerful components.
In 2019, Apple tried to revive the Mac Pro with a new tower model that offered more scope for upgrades. But the promised regular updates never came. It wasn’t until 2023 that the switch to Apple’s own processors took place with the introduction of the M2 Ultra. Since then, little has changed on the device, which further diminishes the importance of the Mac Pro.
In contrast, the Mac Studio has established itself as the new favorite for computing-intensive tasks. With its compact size and powerful M3 Ultra processor introduced earlier this year, Apple’s attention is increasingly turning to this model. Industry observers assume that Apple is currently working on a new generation of the Mac Studio with M5 Ultra processors, while no corresponding further developments are planned for the Mac Pro.
This development indicates a change in priorities at Apple. The Mac Studio now covers many of the needs that were previously attributed to the Mac Pro. It requires less space and is easier to integrate into existing work environments. It appears that the Mac Pro will no longer play a central role in Apple’s long-term desktop planning, as the focus is clearly on the Mac Studio.
