The Spanish Chief Public Prosecutor is accused of leaking a secret email to the press related to an investigation targeting the husband of the President of the Madrid Region, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, a rising star in the Popular Party (the right-wing opposition).
Agence France-Presse quoted its correspondent in Madrid as saying that the public prosecutor arrived at the trial site and sat next to his lawyers who attended with him.
The Supreme Court (the highest judicial institution in Spain) must decide by November 13 whether the Public Prosecutor intentionally violated the confidentiality of the investigation with the aim of damaging the image of Díaz Ayuso.
It is noteworthy that last Thursday, an investigation committee in the Senate questioned the Prime Minister regarding a corruption case that targeted two people who were his advisors in the Socialist Party.
In this context, Begonia Gomez, the Prime Minister’s wife, is expected to be tried soon in another case related to corruption and abuse of influence, while his brother David faces charges of abuse of influence in a third case.
For his part, Pedro Sanchez denounced these trials, and considered them part of a destabilization campaign launched by the Popular Party and the far right.
