On Black Friday, one of the most important days in retail, thousands of Amazon employees in Germany gathered for a strike. The ver.di union has called on employees at several locations, including Bad Hersfeld and Dortmund, to stop working. The strike is part of a global day of action under the motto “Make Amazon Pay,” which aims to draw attention to poor working conditions and inadequate pay at Amazon.
Silke Zimmer, member of the ver.di federal board, sharply criticizes the working conditions at Amazon. She emphasizes that employees are under enormous pressure all year round, which peaks on Black Friday. The union is demanding that Amazon recognize the unionized employees as negotiating partners and conclude a collective agreement. The shipping giant employs around 40,000 people in Germany, many of whom have no collective bargaining coverage.
It’s not just Amazon that is the focus of the protests. The employees of the stationary retailer SportScheck, which belongs to the Cisalfa Group, have also increased their protest. The collective bargaining talks to recognize the area collective agreements failed at the beginning of November. Zimmer criticizes that Cisalfa has money for a premium and risk system, but not for binding structures. She warns of the long-term consequences if companies do not invest in their employees.
Amazon has responded to the strike call and emphasized that customers can continue to rely on fast and reliable delivery. Oliver Kentschke from Amazon Corporate Communications emphasizes that employees benefit from fair wages and good additional benefits. The starting wage is 15.65 euros gross per hour, and there are numerous extras such as further training funding and family bonuses. Despite the strikes, there should be no impact on customer orders as Amazon has an extensive network of logistics centers.
