CDMX. The single “Antes Me Gustabas” by the Gatos Rockabilly in duet with Alex Lora from El Tri and Los Rebeldes de España, promises to become a milestone of the genre. The song was composed by maestro Luis Álvarez “El Haragán”, one of the most influential composers of Mexican rock, who brought them together in the same recording. It is a monumental collaboration, a generational and transatlantic crossing that in itself already marks a before and after. For Los Gatos Rockabilly, this release represents a dream come true: “This song is very special for Los Gatos, since both artists are our teachers,” they shared. The night of Saturday, November 29, will mark an unprecedented chapter in the history of Latin American rockabilly. The Alicia Forum, that sanctuary of the capital’s counterculture, will open its doors to a long-awaited event: the first formal presentation in Mexico of ‘The Rebels’, the legendary Spanish band that since 1979 has built a sound bridge between Europe and the indomitable spirit of rock and roll
Since its birth in Barcelona at night, among roaring motorcycles and bars that smelled of beer and freedom, The Rebels They defined an aesthetic and a sound that clashed with everything around them. While the city opted for Layetan jazz or the Catalan movement, Carlos Segarra and company chose the path of leather, boots and the wild pulse of rockabilly. Their debut album Cervezas, Chicas y Rockabilly opened a gap that many today consider foundational in Spanish rock. They supported Chuck Berry, The Ramones and Mike Oldfield, and sold close to a million copies, always guided by the intuition and raspy voice of Segarra, a narrator who turned rebellion into a way of life. “I have always felt that the blood of mariachis, rock and roll and the road are the same thing,” he has once said, and this debut in Mexico is the symbolic materialization of that feeling.
The concert at the Alicia Forum will be a celebration of his legacy, a review that will include generational anthems such as “Mediterráneo”, “Bajo la luz de la luna” and “El rock del hombre lobo”, pieces that have accompanied different generations of rockers over four decades. But it will also be a cultural dialogue: an encounter between Spain and Mexico through the primitive rhythm that both scenes have been able to preserve.
