The United Nations Rapporteur for Human Rights in Palestine, Francesca Albanese, said that a new United Nations report concluded that the Israeli war on Gaza erased 69 years of human development, including the destruction of health care, education, infrastructure, and even banks.

Albanese wrote in a post on the X website – Tuesday – that this represents the worst economic collapse ever recorded, and added, “This is not a war, it is genocide.”

The UN rapporteur published a copy of the summary of the report issued by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), which explained that the devastation that Palestine has witnessed since October 2023 “unleashed successive economic, humanitarian, environmental and social crises, pushing the occupied Palestinian territories from lack of development to complete destruction.”

The report stated that Gaza’s economy contracted by 87% during the years 2023 and 2024, bringing the per capita GDP to only $161, which is one of the lowest rates recorded globally.

The UN body explained that the Israeli war destroyed every pillar of survival, including food, shelter, and health care, pushing Gaza towards “the brink of complete collapse.”

The report said that the resulting economic crisis is among the 10 worst global economic crises since 1960.

He warned that the recovery process may take many decades, during which Gaza will remain dependent on intensive international support, indicating that reconstruction will require more than 70 billion dollars.
