This support will make it possible to further expand commitment to STEM education for K-12 students in Alabama and to nurture the next generation of scientists and engineers.

The Alabama Space Grant Consortium (ASGC) has received a $20,000 donation from the National Space Club – Huntsville for the second consecutive year. This financial support is a significant contribution to advancing STEM (mathematics, computer science, science and technology) education in Alabama. The ASGC uses these funds to develop and strengthen long-term engagement with students from elementary through high school.
The donation allows ASGC to leverage its connections with eight Alabama colleges, including two historically black colleges and universities. This allows scholarships and fellowships to be offered that support dozens of students in the fields of STEM and education. This initiative aims to inspire and train the next generation of professionals in the fields of space science and aerospace technology.
The consortium, based at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, was founded in 1989 when NASA created the National Space Grant College and Fellowship Program. It is a voluntary association of eight public research universities as well as other community colleges, industry and government organizations. The ASGC’s mission is to inspire, empower and educate Alabama students to pursue careers in space science and related fields.
An important component of ASGC’s commitment is the K-12 Engagement Plan, which provides teacher training and uses ASGC-supported students as “outreach ambassadors.” These ambassadors travel across the state to introduce students to the excitement of space travel. From January to August, the group traveled nearly 1,700 miles and made presentations in 24 school systems, reaching 2,266 students in grades 4-12.
With the new funding, ASGC plans to leverage the Alabama Math, Science, and Technology Initiative and the Black Belt STEM Institute to reach more schools and teachers than ever before. The goal is to reach 4,000 students by June next year. Programs are thematically diverse to cover all grade levels, including presentations on the solar system for grades K through 5, programming a Mars rover for students in grades 6 through 12, and mapping the Milky Way to explain dark matter for students in grades 8 through 12.
The National Space Club – Huntsville, a nonprofit organization, supports the aerospace community by promoting STEM education, encouraging the advancement of rocketry and astronautics, and recognizing achievements in the field. The organization offers scholarships and supports youth education through various local programs, while also serving as a networking platform for government, industry and education professionals.
