An official source at the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement to the official news agency (SANA), denied what was published by Reuters about the United States’ readiness to establish a military presence at an air base in the Syrian capital, Damascus.
The source told SANA on Thursday, “The current stage is witnessing a shift in the American position towards dealing directly with the central Syrian government, supporting efforts to unify the country and rejecting any calls for division.”
He added, “Work is underway to transfer the partnerships and understandings that were necessary with temporary bodies to Damascus, within the framework of joint political, military and economic coordination.”
Reuters quoted six sources as saying that the United States is preparing to establish a military presence at an air base in Damascus to help monitor a possible security agreement between Syria and Israel. But she added that it was not yet clear when American soldiers would be sent to the base.
US President Donald Trump is scheduled to receive his Syrian counterpart Ahmed Al-Sharaa at the White House next Monday.
