A drone targeted the Kormor gas field in the Kurdistan region of Iraq on Wednesday evening, causing a “complete interruption of gas supplies to power stations” and suspending operations in the field.
Security sources reported that the attack, which hit gas tanks in the field, caused a large fire to break out and some workers were injured.
A video clip published by the Kurdish channel Rudaw on the X website showed smoke rising from the site after the attack.

The Ministries of Natural Resources and Electricity in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq announced in a joint statement that all gas supplies to power stations in the region had stopped following the attack, and confirmed that they are working in cooperation with Dana Gas, the Emirati company investing in the field, on the line of follow-up and investigation into the circumstances of the incident and restoring the normal situation.
The spokesman for the Ministry of Electricity in Iraqi Kurdistan, Omid Ahmed, said that power decreased by about 2,600 megawatts out of four thousand as a result of the attack, which affects the supply of gas-powered stations. He added, “About 80% of the electricity was cut off” in the region, where more than 6.5 million people reside.
Agence France-Presse reported that power was cut off in several areas, including the city of Sulaymaniyah, the second largest city in the region.
It is not yet clear who was responsible for the attack.
This is the second drone targeting the field within days, as Iraqi Kurdish security forces fired on a drone to prevent it from reaching the field on Sunday evening.
The Kormor gas field is located between the cities of Kirkuk and Sulaymaniyah, in an area administered by the authorities of the Kurdistan region of Iraq. This site has been targeted by several attacks in recent years, for which no party has claimed responsibility.
The continuous supply of gas from the Kormor field to power stations in Iraqi Kurdistan provides more than 75% of the electricity generation capacity in the region, according to the company.
In early February, the field was attacked by a drone that did not result in any damage, while the local authorities held “outlaw militias” responsible.
At the end of April 2024, four Yemeni workers were killed in a drone bombing that targeted the field.
At the end of January 2024, two Katyusha missiles targeted the site.
In June and July of this year, attacks with bomb-laden drones targeted energy facilities in the Kurdistan region, causing significant material damage.
No party claimed responsibility for any of these attacks, while Baghdad pledged to investigate to clarify the circumstances.
