The discussion about a new 40-hour work day in Mexico is an expectation of the workers’ sectorbut we still need to know the proposal as such that will be debated in the Congress of the Union. However, The voices about its benefits arise again. How would it improve the quality of life of millions of workers? Here is a study about it.

In Mexico, 55% of automotive industry leaders agree on the implementation of the 40-hour workdayaccording to a study by Kelly, a company specialized in employment-related services.

According to the document, 27.7% of automotive industry leaders partially agree with the 40-hour work week and 9.5% disagree.

In addition, 29.7% of automotive sector leaders consider that the implementation of this measure could imply a reorganization of shifts and 23.4% an increase in labor costs.

While 10% stated that there would be a need to invest in automation; 6.7% consider that it will not generate any significant impact; 4.3% believe that there will be greater difficulty in meeting deadlines; and 4% think there will be a reduction in productivityaccording to the study Work Environment Trends in the Automotive Industry Mexico 2025.

Meanwhile, 18.6% consider that reducing hours worked will generate well-being and satisfaction among employees.

New working hours would improve quality of life

For its part, two out of three workers stated that a shorter day would improve their quality of life, allow them to spend more time with their family and help them maintain emotional stability.

In a press conference, Norma Godínez, director of Human Resources and Talent at Kelly, highlighted that, currently, six out of 10 people working in the automotive industry are men and the majority belong to Generation X and Millennials.

Besides, four out of 10 workers claim to work 48 hours a week and three out of 10 exceed this limit.

Regarding labor flexibility, The in-person model continues to be predominant in the automotive industry where seven out of 10 workers and three out of 10 leaders work 100% in the facilities.

Still, more than half say their companies offer flexible schemes.

The talent surveyed considers that the advantages of flexible schemes are: better balance between life and work; and economic savings of resources.
