10 people were injured, including four in serious condition, in a hit-and-run accident that occurred today, Wednesday, on the tourist island of Oléron, western France, after a 35-year-old man hit his car into a group of pedestrians and cyclists.
French Public Prosecutor Arnaud Larayes said that the driver, a resident of the island, “deliberately hit a number of pedestrians and cyclists” on a road linking the towns of Dolos d’Oleron and Saint-Pierre d’Oleron, noting that the suspect chanted “Allahu Akbar” when he was arrested.
The Public Prosecutor explained that the man was being investigated on charges of “attempted murder,” while the motives for the accident were not yet clear. Informed sources reported that the driver continued to run over the victims over a period of several kilometers before he was controlled and arrested.
For his part, French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said on the X platform that two of the injured were receiving treatment in intensive care, stressing that the police arrested the perpetrator and opened an expanded investigation into the incident.
In turn, the mayor of Dolos Doleron, Thibaut Breshkov, indicated that the suspect is in his thirties and resides in the town, pointing out that the authorities are looking into his psychological state and the possibility of him suffering from mental disorders.
French media reported that the Anti-Terrorism Public Prosecution is not currently supervising the investigation, while the authorities continue to evaluate the circumstances of the incident to determine whether it was of a terrorist nature or the result of a psychological disorder.
