The terrifying discovery was made around noon on Tuesday at the hotel in the Lardos area, reports Greek news site Dimokratiki.

A British doctor was staying at the same hotel and rushed over to give emergency first aid.

He attempted to resuscitate her, but these efforts were reportedly unsuccessful.

She was then rushed to Rhodes Hospital, where she underwent an MRI.

Tragically, this showed she had suffered brain swelling – which can have permanent consequences.

Michalis Sokorelos, the hospital’s director, described her condition as “brain dead”.

He said: “The child obviously stayed in the water for a long time. She is not reacting at all.

“She was taken to the hospital at around 12.30pm. The incident is very serious.”

Police arrested the three-year-old’s uncle and the hotel manager.

The toddler’s family, visiting Rhodes for a late-summer holiday, have not made any comment on the tragedy.
