Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa announced this Thursday that, after leaving the position of President of the Republic, he intends to be guest professor at a university in California and enjoy watch the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
The head of state, who spoke during a meeting of the Portuguese Olympic Committeein a restaurant in Lisbon, where decorated medal-winning athletessaid that in 2028 he will be “a free man” and will be able to experience the Olympic Games in another way.
“I’m going to be a guest teacher in California and, therefore, it combines the useful with the pleasant, which is being there to teach, as a guest, in the year 2028 and, as you can imagine, it is a unique and privileged condition to, with more time, see more sports and follow even more of the triumphs of our athletes”, he declared.
In his speech, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa considered that the 2028 Olympic Games are “a bet” of the PSD/CDS-PP Government and expressed the expectation that whoever succeeds him as head of the State, from March 9 next, will attend “a huge leap in Portugal’s Olympic presence.
The head of state said that he has spoken about this issue with the prime minister in weekly meetings and pointed out “enthusiasm” by Luís Montenegro with “the bet on the 2028 Olympic Games” as the “strongest” signal that “it wants to last at least four years”.
