Cisco Systems has announced that it will acquire NeuralFabric Corp. to further expand its capabilities in the field of generative artificial intelligence. NeuralFabric, a Seattle-based startup, was founded in 2023 by former Microsoft engineers and specializes in developing domain-specific small language models (SLMs). These models allow companies to leverage their own proprietary data and deploy it in both SaaS and on-premise environments.
DJ Sampath, vice president of product, AI software and platform at Cisco, highlighted in a blog post that NeuralFabric has solved data sovereignty challenges, which is a significant barrier to AI adoption. The financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed, but the strategic importance of this acquisition is clear as Cisco advances its AI strategy with $1 billion in investments through 2024.
NeuralFabric will be integrated into Cisco’s AI Canvas, a generative AI user interface that was unveiled at Cisco Live in June. This integration is supported by the introduction of advanced tools for modular SLM development, optimized model training and flexible deployment options. Sampath explained that NeuralFabric’s technology will strengthen the foundation of AI Canvas and promote the development of domain-specific AI models such as the Deep Network Model.
The acquisition of NeuralFabric is part of Cisco’s broader strategy focused on investing in emerging AI companies. In addition to acquiring NeuralFabric, Cisco has also recently invested in other startups such as Gruve.ai and Mistral AI.
