CBS quoted informed sources as saying that senior military officials provided President Donald Trump with updated options regarding possible operations in Venezuela, while the US Army announced a military operation called “Southern Spear” to combat drug trafficking.
The sources revealed that the possible options included launching ground attacks.
The sources indicated that Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and other officials briefed Trump on the military options available for the coming days, but two informed sources confirmed to the channel that a final decision has not yet been made regarding possible operations in Venezuela.
Meanwhile, the US Secretary of War announced an American military operation that he said would target “drug-related terrorists” in the Western Hemisphere.

In this context, the Washington Post said that the Office of Legal Counsel of the US Department of Justice issued a confidential opinion stipulating that soldiers participating in military strikes on boats suspected of drug smuggling in the Caribbean Sea would not be subject to legal prosecution in the future.
The newspaper confirmed that the opinion considers that the United States is in a non-international armed conflict that allows strikes in accordance with the powers of the president under Article II of the Constitution.
For his part, an official at the Ministry of War said on Thursday that the United States this week launched its twentieth raid on boats suspected of being used in drug smuggling.
The official added, “The strike occurred (on a boat) in the Caribbean and 4 terrorists involved in drug trafficking were killed, and no one survived.”
The official stated that 79 people were killed and two were injured and returned to their countries, while the Mexican authorities carried out one rescue attempt at sea after these raids.
It is noteworthy that last August, US President Donald Trump issued an executive order requiring increased use of the army under the pretext of combating drug cartels in Latin America.
Washington announced the sending of warships and a submarine off the coast of Venezuela, while US Defense Secretary Hegseth said that the army is ready for operations, including regime change in Venezuela.

On the other hand, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, in an interview with CNN, called on the American people to unite with Venezuela for peace in the region.
On Wednesday, Maduro ordered the formation of national defense commands, while Reuters reported that Caracas had begun deploying weapons, including Russian-made equipment, and was planning guerrilla-style resistance operations in the event it was exposed to an American air or ground attack.
Reuters quoted its sources as saying that the Venezuelan government is planning to adopt two possible strategies in the event that it is exposed to an American attack. One of them is a guerrilla defense, which the government called “prolonged resistance” and was mentioned in programs on state television.
This method involves small military units in more than 280 locations carrying out acts of sabotage and other guerrilla tactics, according to sources and old planning documents for these methods seen by Reuters.
The second strategy, called “chaos,” uses intelligence services and armed ruling party supporters to create chaos on the streets of the capital, Caracas, and make Venezuela ungovernable by foreign forces, according to a source familiar with the defense efforts and another source close to the opposition.
The attacks launched by the US military on boats in the Caribbean and the Pacific Ocean, allegedly smuggling drugs, and directly targeting the people on board, sparked controversy over extrajudicial killings in the international community.
