The political environment in Cuautitlán Izcalli was turned on after the mayor Daniel Serrano Palacios openly confronted the PAN party for its criticism of the Housing for Wellbeing program, promoted by the federal government.
During a conference, the councilor described the position of the PAN and maintained that his statements lack moral authority, since he assured that it was PAN governments that promoted uncontrolled urban growth for more than a decade.
Serrano He recalled that previous administrations authorized subdivisions and works in areas of high environmental fragility without the corresponding technical studies. He particularly mentioned the Lake Guadalupe area, where, he said, permits were granted for drainage connections and earthworks without due evaluation.
The mayor’s claim also pointed to practices that, in his opinion, evidence a deliberate abandonment of urban regulations. He criticized that in previous governments, sports clubs selling alcohol and the disorderly appearance of “chelerías” were tolerated, which – he stated – generated sources of insecurity and lack of control.
The confrontation has polarized the municipality. “It is necessary to stop those who only criticize; this program can help those who do not have a home,” said Roberto Díaz, a merchant. In contrast, Ana Lilia Campos, a resident of Lomas de Cuautitlán, expressed her concern: “We fear that they will build more homes without first solving the lack of water and drainage. We don’t want promises, we want real solutions.”
