The Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) condemned the circumstances of the death of Palestinian prisoner Muhammad Hussein Muhammad Gawadra inside an Israeli prison, and described it as “a new crime added to the record of black crimes” of Tel Aviv.
Hamas explained in a statement that Ghawadra’s martyrdom came “in light of the deliberate medical neglect, torture, and brutal treatment practiced by the prison administration as part of a systematic policy aimed at killing the will and steadfastness of the prisoners.”

The movement added that it holds the Israeli authorities “fully responsible” for his death, warning against the continuation of the criminal approach against the prisoners, and called for intensifying popular support to defend them until they achieve their freedom.
Hamas called on international and human rights institutions to assume their moral and legal responsibilities regarding the ongoing violations against prisoners, and to pursue the occupation and hold it accountable for its crimes.
The Prisoners’ and Ex-Prisoners’ Affairs Authority and the Palestinian Prisoners’ Club announced the death of Ghawadra, who was arrested in August 2024 and remained detained in the “Janot” prison in southern Israel, without an official Israeli announcement about the circumstances of his death.
The two institutions stated in their statement, “The martyrdom of prisoner Muhammad Gawadra comes in light of the continued systematic incitement led by the occupation authorities, represented by the fascist Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, who seeks to pass a law to execute prisoners, and brags about his crimes against them.”
Israeli Minister of National Security Ben Gvir is seeking to approve a law in the Knesset that would allow the execution of Palestinian detainees, while the currently prevailing laws allow the issuance of life imprisonment multiple times or the detention of Palestinians without trial for a period ranging between 3 and 6 months, subject to renewal, or what is known as administrative detention.
With the death of Ghawadra, the number of martyrs among Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons since the start of the genocide war has risen to 81, in light of the continuation of the crime of enforced disappearance against dozens of detainees, while the total number of martyrs held captive since 1967 has reached 318, according to official Palestinian statistics.
Israel is currently detaining 9,100 Palestinians, including 400 children and 49 women. The number of prisoners whose bodies the occupation is holding before and after the war has reached 89, including 78 after the outbreak of the Gaza War in October 2023.
